Volkswagen could catch up with Tesla in making electric cars
The German manufacturer said it could reach a production of more than 900,000 units by 2023.
Volkswagen is in a position to outperform Tesla, in both electronic car manufacturing and software development numbers, the company's union boss Bernd Osterloh told Welt am Sonntag in an interview.
“If Tesla opens three factories in which between 300,000 and 500,000 cars can be produced, then we are talking about a number of units between 900,000 and 1.5 million. We want to achieve the same by 2023, probably even earlier, ”Osterloh told the newspaper. VW's electrically powered modular matrix platform gives the automaker a "huge" advantage, as it can build any vehicle of any make on it, Osterloh said.
Osterloh also expects the "Artemis" engineering task force, under the leadership of Audi chief Markus Duesmann, to catch up with Tesla in technological capacity.
The new Automotive Software Organization, where all the software operations of automakers are grouped, is the right step in this direction.
